Assumes responsibility for performing and guiding approved self-initiated quality activities leading to innovative applications and extensions of existing and new quality programs of importance to a division. Usually reports to a quality supervisor or manager, or senior technical individual. The employee primarily uses knowledge and use of engineering sciences and advanced level quality tools and methods to complete complex tasks and solve problems. Applies working knowledge of advanced quality technology to assigned processes and products. Possesses an extensive knowledge of assigned products, processes, and services. Understands product systems and has basic understanding of division products. Develops and implements quality systems and processes of major complexity. Uses knowledge of quality technology, statistics, mathematics, science, and applied technology to arrive at practical and cost effective solutions of major complexity.

  • Responsible for performing and guiding technical activities resulting from approved self-initiated or assigned quality programs leading to innovative applications and extensions of existing or new quality programs having major importance to the business unit level
  • Establishes and cultivates an extensive network of resources (laboratory, manufacturing, engineering, sales and marketing) to facilitate completion of assignments
  • Actively participates in project planning
  • Establishes project objectives and priorities
  • Maintains an awareness of quality improvement and product opportunities and is productive in suggesting and testing ideas
  • Develops and implements quality systems and processes of major complexity
  • Documents results, observations and conclusions in technical notebooks (or approved electronic files) and prepares reports to communicate results to appropriate personnel
  • May occasionally train, counsel, and guide technicians, technologists, and engineers
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and projects is required
  • Functions as an effective team leader and promotes harmonious and efficient working relationships
  • Develops communication skills of listening, reading, writing, speaking, persuading, influencing, interpersonal, and team leading skills as well as project management skills
  • Develops knowledge and understanding of, and regularly utilizes, available information, resources, and systems
  • Demonstrates computer literacy and a good working knowledge of applicable software
  • Demonstrates an extensive knowledge of customer requirements, product performance, and relative performance of competitive offerings.
  • Use of basic quality tools such as flowcharts, checksheets, histograms, Pareto charts, run charts/control charts, cause and effect diagrams, scatter plots, and Control Methods
  • Use of process improvement and problem solving methodologies, such as “PDCA”, Six Sigma “DMAIC”, and “7 Step Problem Solving”; working knowledge of the “7 Management and Planning quality tools; and general awareness of Process Re-Engineering techniques
  • Work tasks encompass concepts within multiple disciplines/practices which may include more than one department/location
  • Maintains and improves quality systems and measurements 
  • Reviews and approves non-routine and difficult functional analysis conducted by subordinates 
  • Provides quality consulting to application engineers and business leaders. 
  • Develops and implements quality plans, supplier control, and factory acceptance testing to customer requirements. 
  • Investigates quality related issues with customers and engineering department to determine root cause of manufacturing failures, developing a plan of action to address related issues 
  • Examines materials issues that are causing product failures, deficiencies, scrap, etc. with vendors and supply chain.
  • Negotiates and counsels at an advanced level with an audience which may not be knowledgeable in the subject area. Demonstrates solid persuasion skills and manages differing interests and perspectives


  • Associates degree or equliviant related work experience
  • Quality Engineering experience in a plastics manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
  • Ability to read and understand test methods, sampling plans and calibration systems
  • Understanding of process capability measurements and SPC systems
  • Working knowledge of the corrective action process
  • Ability to address technical problems with suppliers, and ensure consistent and predictable materials are supplied to the plant
  • Team player and “can do” attitude


  • Bacholors degree or equlivaiant related work experinece of five plus years
